Care Instructions Tips:

Natural hardwood worktops come with many benefits - not least a luxurious look and durable properties. With basic care & maintenance, your worktop will last a lifetime and beyond. Maintenance simply means a refresh of the protective oil coating every now and then. You’ll know it’s time to re-oil when the existing oil dries out. If a drop of water sits on the work surface, the oil level is fine. If it sinks in, it’s time for another coat. You should also always use a worktop saver for hot cookware and avoid chopping directly on the surface.

about the worktop

Why Iroko worktops?

House of Worktops is proud to offer its customers this spectacular (and highly requested!) wood all the way from its native African west coast. It is a tough, dense and durable wood, making it perfect to build stunning worktops out of. Interestingly, Iroko often referred to as African or Nigerian teak, and is used as a substitute for that wood owing to its colour and grain. Though it's actually not a member of the teak family, it has a character of its own, its beautiful bronze colour developing over time to a beautiful dark shade. The wood has a high oil content, making it naturally hygenic. With its bright, bold colour, we'd say the Iroko worktops add a lot of personality to a kitchen.

Durability & origins
Found in coastal West African countries, the Iroko tree is a large hardwood tree whose wood colour darkens from yellow to rich copper brown. Its recent applications included musical instruments, such as the Basque txalaparta and djembe. For our purposes, it makes for excellent worktop material. Not just is it beautiful, it's very durable and doesn't require regular treatment with oil or varnish, even when used outdoors. It is, however, not the easiest of woods to work with, and needs sophisticated tools and an experienced eye to build a quality one!
